Children’s Ceiling Lights - Bringing Fun to the Fore in the Lighting World
When it comes to a child’s bedroom or playroom, choosing the right children’s ceiling light goes beyond just colour or design. Whether you're selecting a light based on your child’s favourite hue or replacing one with a character from their favourite show, it’s essential to consider the quality of the lighting in their room.
Why are LED lights best for a child’s room?
Halogen bulbs, commonly used in traditional lights, emit heat and can cause burns, while compact fluorescent lamps contain mercury, making them unsuitable. LED lights, however, are the perfect choice for children’s rooms. They’re safe, efficient, and long-lasting, offering numerous advantages:
- Optimum lighting quality
- Mercury-free
- Switching resilience, even if children play with the light switches
- Energy-saving, even when left on all day and night
- Long lifespan, reducing the need for frequent bulb replacements
How bright does a children’s ceiling light need to be?
The days of relying solely on watts are behind us. With energy-efficient LED bulbs, brightness is measured in lumens, which tell you how much light the bulb produces. To determine the right brightness, multiply the area of your child’s room in square meters by 140 (lumens). This gives you the approximate lumens required for your new children’s ceiling light.
For example, for a room of 15m², you'd need a light providing around 2,100 lumens. This can be achieved with a 3-bulb ceiling light using 700-lumen bulbs or a 5-bulb fixture with 400-lumen bulbs.
What kind of light is right for children?
A child’s room serves as both a living and sleeping space, so the type of light you choose is crucial. Ideally, children’s ceiling lights should offer general illumination that balances warmth and brightness. Two key features to consider are colour temperature and colour rendering.
- A warm white colour temperature (around 2,700 kelvins) creates a cosy, calming light for relaxation.
- A colour rendering index of at least Ra 80 ensures vibrant, accurate colours, making toys, books, and other items appear as bright and lively as they should.
With the right lighting, children can fully enjoy their colourful and playful surroundings.
